Nehemiah Smith born c1797
« on: Friday 29 December 17 20:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have a Nehemiah Smith who married Sarah Hackett in Frome @1823. He was an Engine Driver and on each census from 1851/1881 he claimed to have been born in a different parish.

Midsomer Norton#
Chewton Mendip
Timsbury
Farmborough

He appears to have been born @1799, but searches on online Parish Transcriptions have not uncovered his baptism. His son also c alled N ehemiah went on to become a well respected Methodist Minister.

Many Thanks

David

Hi

I have looked at any births that I can find and there are a few, one in London born 1800 - this guy dies in London c1840. Another - NEHEMIAH ARTHER SMITH baptised in Bristol 19 May 1805 son of Thomas and Mary Smith.

This Nehemiah A Smith seems to have been adopted to most 'trees' people have online as the man who married Sarah Hackett.

Thomas & Mary Smith also had an earlier son Nehemiah ARTHURS Smith baptised 1792 Bristol that died in 1796 and was buried in Bristol.

The only other I can see is a Nehemiah Smith baptised 27 Aug 1794 in Uley, Gloucestershire, son of Nathaniel and Catherine.

Hi
From 1841 to 1881 Nehemiah says he was born in Somerset, so I don't think he was an out of county man.  I would suggest using Genuki, etc to make a list of all the churches in Midsomer Norton, Chewton Mendip, Timsbury and Farmborough and search the parish registers for each one for say 1790-1815 (in case he was bpt late).  Primarily for Nehemiah, but also make a note of whether there were any Smiths just in case it is helpful later.  Bear in mind that there seems to be a non conformist element.  Freereg have reasonable coverage of some of these parishes.  When searching on-line records make sure that no years for this period are missing.

If the registers for a particular parish are not on line make a specific post for look up help here on rootschat
eg please can someone check the bpt register for St Mary Magdalene, Chewton Mendip 1790-1815 for Nehemiah Smith
and work your way through the parishes

He's around there somewhere and there is a connection between these places.  Whilst NH is living in Midsomer Norton in the 1851 census, his sons James and Charles both married on 25/12/1851 in Timsbury.  A timeline for NH might help as well.

It may also be worth joining the Somerset Family History Society for a year to see whether the locals can help.

Happy hunting
