Warwick-Garratt family of Hanslope
« on: Sunday 31 December 17 02:43 GMT (UK) »
In the 1851 census, we find John Warwick and wife Sarah, both 35, with a passel of children including the eldest, Frances Garratt, listed as "wife's daughter", aged 15. In the 1841 census, we find John and Sarah already married, with no Frances in sight, but they do have their eldest daughter together, Jane Warwick.

For some reason, I can't seem to find birth records in GRO for the Warwick children except for Elizabeth, born 1850. Her mother's maiden name is given as Garratt.

Was Sarah married before, to a Garratt? Or was Frances born out of wedlock? Where is Frances on the 1841 census? I did find what appears to be the right birth record for Frances in GRO under the year 1838, but there's no mother's maiden name listed.

On the GRO index if there is no mother's name listed it usually means that the child is illegitimate and therefore has the same surname as the unmarried mother.

The birth reg for Frances Ann Garratt reg district Newport Bagnall 1838 looks good as Newport Bagnall reg dist includes Hanslope which is Frances' birth place on the 1851 census.

(Source of all above FreeREG)

1851 Frances Garratt is age 15 (1836)

As John/Sarah married Aug 1838 I dont think that Frances Ann Garrat Dec 1838 birth reg is her.
Strange as there is a death reg Sept 1838 for a Frances Ann Garratt NP and GRO has her age 0.

Trish :)

The Hanslope PRs transcribed by the local historical society can be useful:

Go to the MKHA website www.mkheritage.co.uk and click on View Heritage Websites in centre of page.

From the list select Hanslope & District Historical Society

Select Church Records on the Village Records list and then select New Search on the RHS

Put in Fanny as given name and Gar as surname, select female and yob as 1836 +- 5 years

12 Sept 1852 baptism of an illeg Fanny to Sarah Garratt - if this is the Frances/Fanny we are looking for then she would have been about 15/16 at the time but maybe she was being sent into domestic service and her employer insisted she had to have been baptised?

Gypsy DRAPERs, children of Billy and Mary - Ellen,Darnity,Spencer,Billy Jnr,Kisby,Ellick
Descendants of Fred and Esther (Garrett) WHITLOCK - Wavendon, Woburn Sands area
Descendants of George and Barbara (Willis) SUTTON - Earls Barton and Nether Heyford
BISSELL - Hanslope, New Bradwell, Bucks and Aston, Birmingham area
Lavinia DRAPER died 1840 Cranfield
Gypsies in the Bow Brickhill and Beds/Bucks border areas

Excellent find Tazzie and Darnity :)

Definitely her as it is the same date as Jane Maria Warwick was Baptised;
JANE MARIA Warwick 12 Sep 1852

It seems late Baptisms were not unusual for the Family.
Eg;
ANN Warwick 9 Oct 1859 (birth 25 Dec 1846**)

Trish :)

EDIT, I missed that Baptism which is on FreeREG for Fanny!
