Christopher Rossiter and Christopher Rossiter
« on: Sunday 31 December 17 21:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I'd appreciate any assistance linking these two Christophers. One tree ends close to where another begins, but I can't make the link. I've come back to this after a few years (tempted in to 40% off Ancestry!)

I'll start with the well-researched Christopher Rossiter. His ancestry goes up to what I call the 'posh Rossiters', who have their own coat of arms. They are all from Somerset (1400s), then Lincolnshire, until Christopher's father, Richard, settles in London with his wife Christinia (where I'm hoping I can form a link to my Rossiters):

Christopher Rossiter
Birth: 29 Mar 1688 St Bride Fleet Street, London, England
Death: 1724 St George The Martyr, Queen Square, Middlesex, England
Married Mary
Can't find any children

Then there is the last ancestor in my tree, my 7th great grandfather, Christopher Rossiter. . I think his parents are (another) Christopher Rossiter and 'Elizabeth' (can't find anything on her).

Christopher Rossiter
Birth about 1690
Death 1724
Married Joan Blundell in 1708
Children George (b.1712 - my 6th great grandfather) and James (b.1714)

I don't think they are the same person??

If anyone has any clues on how to continue with either of these Christophers, please let me know. It's driving me mad!

Thanks

Marc

Hi

Have you got the baptism for your Christopher Rossiter born c1690 ?

If so, I think I may muddy the waters, there appears to be another Christopher / Rossiter family around the same time

I can see two baptisms: the first that you mention in 1688 and then this record

Christopher Rossiter bapt. 13 Aug 1691 at St Andrews Holborn London son of Christopher & Mary, this child was buried 25 May 1692.

*********

I can only see one burial too in 1724 on the 9th March recorded at St George the Martyr and at St Andrew Holborn.

How can you be sure that the Christopher buried in 1724 is not the father of the child baptised in 1691 ? His first wife (Mary) may have died and he then married Joan/ Jane.

It is very confusing, I agree :)

Did he leave a Will in 1724 ?

Thanks for the response, I obviously have some work to do!

I had some incorrect sources linked to my record so I’ve cleared them so I can start again with my Christopher's birth record.

I’m starting with the fact that my great x6 grandfather George was baptised 29 Apr 1712 and Christopher and Joan are listed as parents (familysearch via ancestry).

Now to identify George’s father. Maybe you are right. Maybe he remarried after Joan.

Aggghhhh!

There is an apprenticeship Record for James Rossiter son of Christopher Rossiter of St Andrews Holborn, Victualler, to be apprenticed to William Bradshaw to be taught Clothwerk (spelling as in document) dates 7 October 1729.
Which means this James was about 13/14 years old born circa 1714/15.
Also that Christopher Rossiter of St Andrews Holborn was still alive 1729, the document does not say deceased.
Listed under Freedom of the City on ancestry.

ADDED the apprenticeship of George Rossiter 1727 states father Christopher Rossiter is deceased.

Thanks. I have that record. Thanks for the reminder.

I appear to have found 2 baptism records for Christopher. Both dated 13th Aug 1691 and both from St Andrews Holburn. One lists Christopher and Joan as parents, the other Christopher and Mary!

Any ideas why two?

Thanks again!

There is a will of George Rossiter written 6 January 1756 probated 1757, he is of St Andrews Holborn Middlesex, Victualler.
Wife Mary
sons George, Christopher, James, John, William, Richard, Jeremiah and daughter Elizabeth, also described as a son in law Joseph Bradshaw his wife's son by her previous marriage. Today we would say Step son.

This George Rossiter could be a sibling of James Rossiter son of Christopher mentioned in previous post, re occupation of both Christopher, and George (victualler) and the naming of his children.

Plus is George's wife Mary the widow of William Bradshaw who took James as an apprentice or perhaps the widow of one of his sons
