Gertrude Mary Davenport aka Bromley
« on: Tuesday 02 January 18 12:47 GMT (UK) »
Many thanks to those of you that have helped me establish this lady's background in the past.  Now  I am stuck again!

She was born Gertrude Mary Davenport, 1878, St Linford, Bucks (father Gerge Henry Davenport of Cirencester).  Her family subsequently moved to Swindon and took the surname Bromley (although Davenport still appears on death certs etc).  She had two illegitimate children in 1905 and 1911, the second of which was my grandmother.

Ideally I would like to find whether she ever married but, having found several possibles, am unable to find enough details to either confirm them or rule them out.  Can't seem to find any death records under either of her "maiden" names, so am assuming she did marry at some time.

Any help or ideas much appreciated!  Thanks.

Do you have her exact date of birth.  The free index for 1939 register has a Gertrude M Davenport in the Swindon area date of birth 1876.

Playing with the search her birth is shown as November.  The year in 1939 could be wrong and her birth which was registered March 1878 could be for a November birth.   :-\

The free index shows her in the same household as Percy Eatwell.  I presume he is the one that married  Evelyn M Davenport (aka Bromley)  ;D

Interesting, when I was a child our MP in Cheshire was called Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Walter Henry Bromley Davenport.  He lived in Capesthorn Hall, Macclesfield, Cheshire, which is still privately owned stately home, although available for weddings, corporate events etc. and the gardens are open occasionally to the public.

Apparently the family were originally just Davenport but took the name Bromley by Royal licence in 1822.  Whether there is any connection to your family I don't know.

Lizzie

ps.  I must have been a very odd child to know the name of our MP when I was only about 7 or 8. :-\

So either a distant connection, or he heard about the Bromley Davenports and decided to change his name to match.  ::)

Curiously, I had contact on this board years ago from a descendant of George Henry Davenport/Bromley, Gertrude's younger brother, saying that George's family "all went to Cheshire".  Something to investigate at a later date I think!
Thank you both for your interest.
(I was not aware of the 1939 Register Rosie - plenty of work to do there :))
