Where to Start Finding John Edward Johnston migrated 1924

Hi

I was hoping someone might be able to advise where I can look to try and try and find information on a cousin who migrated to Canada in 1924.

Details are:
John Edward Johnston born 15 Oct 1895 in Widnes, Lancashire
Parents: Charles Joseph Johnston and Elizabeth Ramsey
1901 Census: Living at 26 Sayce Street, Widnes, Lancashire, England (Recorded as Edward)
1911 Census: Living at 104 Church Street, Flint, North Wales (Recorded as Edward)
Departs 25 Jul 1924 from Liverpool on the Montrose
Arrives Aug 1924 in Quebec and arrivals form gives occupation as Farmer

It looks like the "Destined To" entry says: C.P.R. Land Agent Winnipeg.

Is the CPR the Canadian Pacific Railway and is there somewhere I could look to see if I can find out what happened to him?

It seems he came back to England in Jul 1926 but I haven't established how long that was for yet.

UPDATE: OK Hands up, schoolboy error.  Just found him in the 1939 Register.  I'd still be interested to know what the CPR entry is and why he may have been heading to Winnipeg.

This might be one to investigate further  - it doesn't give a birth date - but would be right area.

Added this guy appears to have been born 20 June 1857 - and was Johnson not Johnston    so one to discount..........

Yes - CPR means Canadian Pacific Railroad

In 1881 the Canadian government granted the CPR a huge tract of land which they could sell in order to finance construction of the transcontinental raiway.  By 1924 the good farming land would have been sold and the dregs were being palmed off on unsuspecting would be farmers from the UK.  I suspect that John Edward may have been one of those who soon realized his error and returned to the old country.

According to the records of CPR land sales found at the follwing site John Edward never purchased any land from the CPR.

For your records, there is an incoming UK passenger list for the Doric which arrived in Liverpool on 4 Jul 1926 with a John Edwd Johnston with an address that matches the one listed on the incoming passenger list documentation.

Thank you everyone.  He did return to the UK and continue to raise a family.  I have found them and am tracing them forward.  Thanks also for the information on the CPR, I will include those notes in my tree.
