donovans born schull cork c 1827
« on: Wednesday 03 January 18 12:13 GMT (UK) »
I started a topic on the Monmouthshire wales board (Birth place of Joanna cante/caute c 1849)
On the 1851 census Dennis Donovan and Mary Donovan give their place of birth as Schull, County Cork Ireland.  Mary sappears to have left ireland pre 1848 and JOANNA CANTY mmn  DONAVAN was born 1848 Sept q in MAIDSTONE Kent, Volume 5 Page 351. It appears that Mary Donovan first went to London/Kent area met Mr Canty and had Johanna, the relationship seems to have not worked out and Mary ends up  in Pontypool Monmouthshire and marries Dennis Donovan. I have a feeling that Mary and Dennis are first cousins. Are there any records for Schull, county cork, that may prove they are related.  The potato famine started in early 1845 so it appears just after this they left Ireland. Are there any emigration records. Could Mary have travelled over with Mr Canty? Any help here would be appreciated

They didn't emigrate as such as Ireland was part of the UK so they simply moved, so no travel records.
Assuming they were RC you could have a look at Irish Genealogy which has transcribed parish records with links to originals.

Hi Kitman,
I have a Denis Donovan who married Mary Lynch in November, 1832 in Midleton. They had at least one daughter, Bridget, who was born around 1831-1832 in Midleton. She ended up in Midleton Workhouse and was one of 24 Irish Famine Orphan Girls who came out to Australia on the John Knox arriving in Sydney in April 1850 from memory. There is a database of the orphans who came to Australia and this is Bridget's entry:
•   Surname : Donovan
•   First Name : Bridget
•   Age on arrival : 19
•   Native Place : Cloyne, Cork
•   Parents : Dennis & Mary (mother living in Cloyne)
•   Religion : Roman Catholic
•   Ship name : John Knox (Sydney Apr 1850)
•   Workhouse : if Cloyne town, Midleton PLU
•   Other : Shipping: house servant, cannot read or write, no relatives in the colony. Register 2 No.878, 5 Jul 1850, Mary Ann O'Connell requires cancellation of indentures

I wonder if there's a connection.
Best wishes,
Rowena
