LEWIS, Helen Van Alma d. 1 Q 1974 Winchester district, Hampshire, obituary?
« on: Saturday 06 January 18 18:21 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for an obituary for my cousin Helen Van Alma LEWIS d. 1 Q 1974 Winchester district, Hampshire. Vol. 6B P.2463. She never married. She had 9 siblings: Alfred, Susan, William, Edwin, Frank, Charles, Harry, Alice, and Sydney. They have been difficult to trace.
 Many thanks.

Helen was born in Barnstable, Devon and died aged 91 years as you say in Winchester. DOB 26/3/1883. You could get her birth certificate which would take you back in time. Possible parents from trees online were Edwin and Susan, but would need checking out well of course.
regards.

That looks to be correct parents as the children match up on census.

Marriage Yeovil Mar 1879
Edwin Lewis
Inson Lane

The original is typed and does read Inson not Susan
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Yes, Helen's parents were Edwin T. Lewis and Susan Lane. Susan was a sister of my great great grandmother, Elizabeth Baker Lane. I've found some nieces and nephews but haven't been able to go any farther than that. I hope an obituary would name surviving relatives.

Heres one of them

Death
March 1976 Droxford  Ref 20 0274
Charles Herbert Lewis age 85  dob 24th Feb 1891

If you can tell us when you lose track of each one (eg have you found marriages or deaths for any) then we can see what we find.  And if you know if any others have middle names.

I was hoping Helen Van Alma would have left a Will, but no sign!

Yes, that's the family in 1901. There was also a daughter Susan b. 3 Q 1882 in Barnstaple, Devon. I have traced as many as I could though freeBMD. I can't buy all the possible certificates.

My sister in law is the grand-daughter of William Lane Lewis through his son Noel William Lewis 1925-2017, known as Dick.  The daughter of Dick's elder brother, Gordon Lane Lewis, is tracing the family history so if you have any specific questions, I would be happy to pass them on.

Dick and his other brother John Richard Lewis ran the family's BSA Motorcycle shop in Weybridge until his retirement in 1987.  They were the third generation and had previously dealt in bicycles and sewing machines.

I was in touch with Gordon and Jennifer a decade ago. Her email address stopped working. Please have her contact me again.
