Please help - Jeremiah & Comfort Crowther Staffs UK

Hi there,

I just wondered if anyone might recognise these names please. I have hit a brick wall trying to find details about Jeremiah's father, mother and siblings.

Jeremiah was born 1848 and possibly died 1924 in the Wolverhampton area (Dudley/Bilsdon Wolverhampton dept on records). I think he was a Wesleyan Baptist??

He married Comfort Devney 22/Feb 1869. His father is listed as Joseph. Jeremiah stays in the area apart from 1881 when he is found in Wales. He is an Iron Roof errector/galvinzer by trade as was his son Albert Arthur so perhaps his father Joseph was too??

Jeremiah had a glass eye and I wondered if anyone might know how he got this? His grandson Via daughter Ann Florence was Sir Charles Wheeler.

If anyone else is researching this tree and knows anything about Joseph (or Jeremiah) or can help in any way I would be really grateful.

His birth registration is on freebmd and using GRO online shows his mother’s maiden name was Lane

Searching GRO for Crowther births with mmn Lane has Ann b 1840 and Emma 1842 Harriet 1844 and Esther 1846

Have you looked for him on the 1851 census x he and sister Emma are with their Crowther grandparents ref HO107 piece 2019 folio 737    Page 7

His birth is listed as Dec.qtr.1848 Dudley, Staffordshire - GRO index shows mothers maiden name is Lane.

Found his marriage to Comfort in 1869 and his father is shown as Joseph Crowther, engineer.

Joseph Crowther 20 married Mary Lane 7/10/1838 St. Peter, Wolverhampton - he is shown as an Engineer and his father as Jeremiah Crowther, carpenter.

However, although I can find Joseph and Mary on 1841/1851/1861 census son Jeremiah is definitely not with the family in 51/61, nor can I find him anywhere else so heaven knows where he was.

Siblings per census/births index are:

Ann - June quarter 1840 Wolverhampton
Emma - Mar.qtr.1842 Wolverhampton (can't find her on census either nor a death entry)
Harriet - Mar.qtr.1844 Dudley
Esther - Dec.qtr.1846 Wolverhampton
Jeremiah - Dec.qtr.1848 Dudley
Benjamin - Mar.qtr.1850 Dudley

Wife Mary died Mar.qtr.1853 Dudley aged 32 - Joseph then remarried to another Mary: Joseph Crowther, 32 (knocked few years off age), widower, engine worker son of 'deceased' married Mary Russell  21 (obviously why he said he was younger) on 18/2/1854 St. John, Wolverhampton

Half-siblings:

Joseph - b.June qtr. 1855 Kings Norton (census states born Selly Oak, Worcs.) - mmn Russell
Edward - b.Mar.qtr.1860 Wolverhampton - mmn Russell
Thomas - b.Mar.qtr.1863 Walsall - mmn Russell
Mary - b.Sept.qtr.1865 Dudley -     ditto
Maria - b.Mar.qtr.1868 Dudley -     ditto 
Clara - b.Mar.qtr.1870 West Bromwich - mmn Russell

Joseph's birthplace changes slightly on the various census albeit all in Staffordshire.   One states Bilston and indeed this does appear to be the right place:

Joseph Crowther bp.27/2/1818 Wesleyan Methodist, Bilston, son of Jeremiah (carpenter) and Mary.

Just found Jeremiah and Mary on 1851 census - he shown bc.1781 Worcestershire - and with them are aforementioned grandchildren Emma and Jeremiah who were not with their parents in 1851 - reason I hadn't previously located them are because surname mistranscribed on Ancestry as 'Crowder.

1841 census records Jerimiah Crowther born 1777-1781(no place of birth)  living in Ettingshall Lane Wolverhampton also Mary born Staffordshire 1782-1786, Edward Russell born Staffordshire 1767-1771 and a Mary Crowther born 1822-1826
