Leitrim Guardian.
This was an eight page paper, somewhat larger than tabloid format, selling at one
penny, which was owned by Dolan, and printed and published in Manorhamilton
every Saturday morning for seven months between July 1907 and February 1908.

The paper’s printing works were located in Balam’s (now Centra) in Upper Main
S t reet.


Sean Mac Diarmada was editor of the paper and also director of elections
for Dolan. Although only 24 years of age at the time he was already an accomplished
public speaker, and had been organiser for the Republican Dungannon Clubs in
Ulster.

hi            Ballam story in brief
George Wesley sold the shop in Ballyfarnon in 1903 to William Lynne and bought the shop in Manorhamilton from his son in law Francis A Brittain. The Brittains moved to Belfast. George W. died in Dec. 1913. The family moved to Belfast. The children were already attending grammer and boarding school in Belfast. They later attended university and the older boys fought in WW1 and in the 20s emi. USA. m. no children. Francis the younger boy went into banking m. 1 boy Timothy died young. The 2 girls were v. musically gifted. Anne Jane Gladys b.1897 attended the Royal Academy of Music and lived London and knew my family. I have a photo of her. died unm. Susan Eileen Winifred b. 1904, attended University College in Dublin studing music, m. George H. Spencer, lived England, had a son died young, and daughter, Wendy who m. Wow fascinating history, Would love to see a the picture of of Anne Jane Gladys. I am finding it easier to go forward but love finding out about the types of jobs that people had back then. I have found that a few are musically inclined, some have an talent for gardening 9(like my sister got it from grandmother Bona Ballam)
Thank you for this info. but not sure what Donagh McGillycuddy - the hereditary chief of the clan in Ireland. I have seen the McGillyccuddy name but not for the Ballams.

WOW have seen some of the book by Cairncross it is mentioned and excerpts used in Dukes history. Too bad I am not in Ireland, would be at the library reading for sure.
