John Ballam had nine children - Harriett no5 m.Francis A. Brittain.- memoir in Leitrim Library by son in law, states Harriett said the Ballam family came from Ballinamuck. This is famous for the battle in 1798
where John and Thomas Ballam were serving officers in Royal Longford Millitia. However I believe Ballinamuck is referrred to as an area and John's  family actually lived in Cloone parish which is 4 miles away across the border into Co. Leitrim. There are are a lot of records in Irish newspapers - Alexander had best bull - John(senior?) is mentioned - landlords mentioned are Duke (christian name) Crofton and the Earl of Leitrim of the townlands Errew and Gortlittera (spelt variously) These are adj. to the castle, now an hotel.  - There are a lot of Duke - (surname)  family living in Mohill. It maybe that John Ballam -senior married into the Duke family hence the name cropping up quite freqently as a christan name. The Britains were known for the Monarch Laundry in Belfast and selling cars - Morris in Dublin.

Than you for the info, Is the John that you mention the father Of Duke (My direct ancestor) and Harriet or their Grandfather? is Thomas his brother? Is the "Cloone Parish"  a church or area?
Can you point me in the direction where I can research records.  I think that you have answered query's for me before.

yes we have messaged before on facebook - re royal ballams.  yes I was referring to John Ballam who married Anne Jane Hawksby and had 9 children. they married about 1837, lived Ballyfarnon.
In Cloone, Co Leitrim, an area or a parish - parish is usually a village and includes surrounding farms or in Ireland - townlands. In about 1860 and that era there is Ballam family still living in Cloone.e.g. Eniskillen Chronicle nov.1860 - article re Lord Leitrim being shot at - the tenants are all listed and Alexander Ballam and Duke Ballam, farmers, at Gortletteragh. family search also has records of 1820 Alexander Ballam m. Eliza Teggart - They have a son called William Duke - he later m. USA - 2 daughters. - so in my opinion the  name of Duke, an unusual name, repeated throughtout must point to our family line. my favourite webs - irishnewsarchive.com, - maps.osi.ie,- irishgenealgynews.com and ballymoteheritage.com - last has Corran Herald online - good reading

Thanks so much for the reading material. Will be getting started with it.  I now in my line there was Duke who moved to NZ and then there was a second Duke 1895 - 1958, from what I understand he is the son of John Herbert Ballam.
