Thomas Carmichael born 15 May 1831, New Kilpatrick
« on: Monday 08 January 18 11:43 GMT (UK) »
Trying to trace the death of my great great grandfather Thomas Carmichael born 15 May 1831 at New Kilpatrick, Scotland. Thomas had served in the Fusilier Guards, Windsor from July 1849 to August 1852, Army Number 3881. He was involved in the Crimean War 1855/56 and in the American Civil War with the US (2nd) Cavalry, Maryland. Last known contact was in May 1866 in the Scots Fusiliers, then on 25 July 1869 as a patient in the Military Hospital, Vauxhall Road, London.

Thomas had a brother Hugh Carmichael who died on 11 January 1918 at Chapelton Cottage in Bearsden, his occupation was recorded as an Inspector of the Poor, anyone heard of that job?
Family names and connections I’m researching.

McKechnie (Ireland, Johnstone, Old Monkland, Bartiebeith, Easterhouse, Auchinloch)

Some background here www.scan.org.uk/knowledgebase/topics/poor_registers_topic.htm and www.workhouses.org.uk/Scotland/

An Inspector of the Poor would examine and consider applications made for poor relief.

This link here www.myainfolk.com/Resources_files/Records_of_the_Scottish_Poor.pdf gives a extensive summary of the range of records maintained and managed.

I am Zoe Northeast, granddaughter of Maximilian Double.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
