Help Needed re WW1 Records for Albert Henry Jones DOB 1884
« on: Monday 08 January 18 15:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi!  Could anyone offer some pointers of where I could continue my search?

I am looking for the WW1 records of Albert Henry Jones born 2 August 1884 in Stepney, London.  At the time of WW1 he was living at 100 Gurney Road, Stratford, London.  I have searched on Ancestry but nothing is coming up which looks likely.  I know many WW1 records were destroyed in WW2.

There are no surviving family members who can help with any info re what Albert did during WW1.

My main question is, does anyone know how I can find out which army regiments were local to 100 Gurney Road (that's assuming he was in the army!)?  I'm not sure how to go about this but thought that if I could find out what was local, then I could email those regiments as they are today and see if they can help re any info regarding AHJ.

Or does anyone else have any other ideas???

Many thanks, Nina

If he was conscripted, then he would have been allocated to a Regiment, rather than choosing one.
2 of my ancestors, from Wiltshire and Somerset, both ended up in Welsh Regiments! ;D

Have you tried other WW1 records? Medal Index Cards for example?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Ah, that's interesting - and means he could have gone much further afield than his local area.

No joy with the WW1 records.  I am currently working my way through the Medal Index Cards - sadly most do not have address details on them and just his name isn't enough for me to be able to identify I have the right person.  Plus having the surname Jones is no help at all!!!

Hello everyone - so I have now gone through all the Medal Cards (and prior to that all the Pension Records and the Service Records again) with no joy - there are plenty of A H Jones and A Jones in the cards but as there are no addresses (or very few) on the back of these cards I have no way of confirming which Jones is the right Jones.

Before I admit total defeat, can anyone think of any other way of tracking down the right Albert Henry Jones DOB 1884 of 100 Gurney Road, Stratford, London in the WW1 records???  Or will this be a brick wall to add to my list of brick walls???

I have checked again and there really are no other living relatives who could help at all.

Many thanks, Nina

I know many WW1 records were destroyed in WW2.

About 60% were lost so you do have to be pretty lucky to find a service record.

You could try the Electoral Rolls 1918/19.
It may just say he was in the military but it could also say which Regt./Batt. he was in. Some did some didn't.
