Meanwhile I have, with the immense help of friends elsewhere, been able to identify war diaries for No 4 SCU at the National Archives for 1943 and 1944 together with information about which organisation they worked for.  It will be of great interest to see in his record where he was and with whom after the 10/44 end date in the Middle East and until discharge in 1946.  You mentioned Bletchley Park - is that from family information?

This biography speaks of No 4 SCU being formed in Aug 44 and going to Germany in 45.  The diaries have MERS (Middle East Royal Signals) in the title  Clearly the date and places clash but until we are clear on father's dates it is best putting it in the "to be resolved" category.

Do let us know when you have the record.  If I find any more nuggets I'll let you know.

I had seen the John Main information but like you was confused by the dates. I will get the forms off tomorrow and hopefully get a quick response.

The war diaries sound extremely interesting and I will post as soon as have more information. The only reason I mention Bletchley is from the fact that SCU no 4 was the Y service but I need to do further research.

Thanks

Claire

Hello, A long time since this post, I know. I have just found out that my father was also in SCU No4. He did talk about the war and I know that he ran messages from Bletchley Park to the War Office.

I hope this helps

Claire does not seem to have posted here since January this year.  I do know form off line contact that she has been able to find out much more about her father's time with SCU 4.  If she doesn't answer soon, try sending her a personal message.

Great Max, many thanks for the help. I will try to decode the information I have before I go much further. I'm assuming that the website given with the records will be sufficient.

Hi Gerald yes Max is right I have managed to find out much more about my father's war years and with Max's help to have a detailed account of what my dad did, especially the SCU4 time. So much so that I was able to donate his war medals to the Royal Signals Museum this Summer and he is now on the Bletchley Park Roll of Honour. I can't thank Max enough. Maybe our father's served together?

If you have his war record we could compare notes. PM me if you like.
