William Armstrong in Spencer Creek, Antrim County Michigan 1880's
« on: Tuesday 09 January 18 12:25 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find these people on census or immigration documents - any help appreciated please!

William Armstrong b circa 1854 Ponteland, Northumberland England had arrived at his sisters by July 1883 in Spencer Creek, Antrim County, Michigan

I believe that the sister was

Mary Ann Armstrong b circa 1867 Ponteland, Northumberland, England
She was established out there but I don't know when she may have emigrated. I believe her husband may have been called George, but don't know if she married in the UK or US. Armstrong was her maiden name.

This information is based on a letter written Sept 1 1884, and she states that William had joined her there in July 1883.

Thanks

I think that the search is best based on William Armstrong, the sister may have been an as yet unidentified sister, or, unlikely, Mary Ann may have returned

In fact, it makes the letter make more sense as the sender gives her love to Mary and the boys, so presumably Mary her only sister that stayed and the boys being all the brothers.

Looking at your post on the Handwriting Board the letter appears to be from M A Suddes , who mentions her husband George. There is a George and Mary A Suddes on the 1880 census  in Antrim :

George Suddes 43 b England
Mary A Suddes 52 b England
address Helena , Antrim, Michigan.

According to the 1900 they married in 1863 and immigrated in 1879.

This looks like the marriage :
George Suddes and Mary Ann Armstrong 3 1862 Weardale Durham 10A 284

This is spot on. Thank you very much. I’ve entered details into Ancestry and as it’s the US, came up with loads of detailed records. It seems that they didn’t have children, but from Mary Ann Suddes nee Armstrong’s death documentation I have now obtained the full name of her mother who is one of my direct ancestors, whom I only had as Mary before. Really, really helpful on a line I was failing to progress on. Thank you so much again! :)

Forgot to say, the letter makes complete sense now, and I can place the people that are being referred to.
