Leonard Goodwin Cundell

Leonard Goodwin Cundell was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England 2nd qtr of 1902. His parents were Albert Augustus Cundell (1872-1934) and Beatrice Olive Cundell, nee Marner (1878-1950).

The Cundell family ware motor car garage proprietors in Tunbridge Wells under the name of A.A. Cundell Limited, which business ended in the 1980's

The local newspaper of Feb 3,1928 announced that Leonard was leaving England and planned to live in Southern Rhodesia with something to do with tobacco.

The T.Wells newspaper of Sept. 6,1929 announced that Leonard married Charlotte Henrriette Eleanor Florence Lee-Dillon at Bulaways, Southern Rhodesia.

The couple had the following children (1) Jack Stratton Cundell (1930-2012) (2) Robin Osmond Cundell (1931-2002) (3) Leonard John Michael Cundell (1943-2005).

I am looking for a passenger record for Leonard departing England arriving in Africa (dates.ship name etc) Also want to know what he did in Africa. I noted that in 1943 he was in the Seychelles and that he died July 26,1952 at Nairobi, Kenya.

Any information about Leonards life/death and career in Africa would be appreciated and want to find out the date of death of his wife. Also in need of photos of him/his wife/his children if possible or other related images of him and his immediate family.

Leonard left Southampton bound for the Cape onboard the Walmer Castle on the 3rd Feb 1828. Aged 25, occupation: Engineer.

In 1936 he (aged 34) left England again bound for the Seychelles ( intended place of residence) with wife Charlotte(30) and two sons Jack (5) and Robin (4).

Onboard the Umtata bound for the Cape.
Departure date: 5 September 1936 from London.

Last known address: Jusiza Grands Vaux, St Helier, Jersey.

Occupation: Motor Engineer.

Thank you very much Claire. Yes the headstone is that of Leonard's wife (the dates match) Can you find Leonard's grave? He died in July 26,1952 at Nairobi Kenya. Any photos of him? Any business information about him ?

Unfortunately it has been extremely difficult trying to find the births of the Cundell children if they were born in Africa - I have been looking! I can't see them in any of the indexes I have access too.

There are a couple of people researching these families too on one of the sites - neither have the places of birth, just the dates that you have too.
