Clarke family of Armagh
« on: Wednesday 10 January 18 20:16 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone, I am asking for some advice/help again.

My 2 x great grandfather, Charles Clarke,  was born between 1842 and 1846, but I do not know where. I have found a marriage for him to a Mary Anne Wilson,in Armagh, on 20th April 1862. The marriage certificate states that he is a Shoemaker. His father was a Peter Clarke, also a Shoemaker. Both Charles and Mary Anne are recorded as being Minors. Mary Anne's father was a John Wilson, a Carpenter.

They had children Herbert, born 27th October 1869 (died 1887), Charles Edmund, born 18th November 1871 (died 1872), Minnie Olive, I think in 1872 (my great grandmother), Charles Edmund Clarke, born 24th June 1873. then finally a Margaret Clarke on 21st May 1876 (died in 1878 in Scotch Street, Armagh). The death register for Margaret shows that she was the daughter of Charles Clarke, Bootmaker, who was present at the death.

I believe that Mary Anne Wilson died in 1877. There is a death record for a Mary Ann Clarke, in Armagh, in Q2, that gives the age at 34, which would tie in with

I have a marriage certificate for a Charles E Clarke marrying a Margaret Jane Buchan in Dumbarton on the 13th March 1906, with father listed as Charles Mills Clarke, Bootmaker, but mother is listed as Elizabeth Clarke (nee WILSON deceased) and NOT as Mary Ann. In 1911 I know that this Charles was living in Clydebank and I also know, that after help from fellow Rootschat members, that he signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912, in Clydebank. His address in Northern Ireland was recorded as 16 Scotch Street, Armagh.

My dilemma is that I have now found a Charles Clarke in the 1901 Census, residing at 16 Scotch Street, Armagh, born in 1846, who is a Shoemaker. He is living with his wife, Elizabeth, born in 1855, and children Alfred Henry Clarke (born c 1880) and Henrietta Clarke (born 1881). I found Henrietta's birth record and it shows she was born in Scotch Street with parents Charles Clarke and Elizabeth Clarke (nee Yaht). Her subsequent marriage certificate to a Robert Johnstone shows her father as Charles Clarke, Boot Merchant.

I cannot find the family in 1911.

Is it likely that there were 2 different Clarke families in Armagh who were both shoe/boot makers and I have mixed the families up? I cannot find any marriage certificate for a Charles Clarke and Elizabeth Yaht, to establish whether this is a second marriage or not.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated, thank you all.

Thanks Hallmark and thank you again Maureen.

I have just downloaded the certificate. Charles is listed as being a widower, occupation a boot and shoemaker. Father is Peter Clarke, a Bootmaker.

So this is the right one.

Thank you so much.
