Looking for RIC records/birthplace/parents or siblings of JAMES KENNY
« on: Thursday 11 January 18 10:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I've been getting nowhere trying to find the RIC records and origins of my Great Grandfather James Kenny.

James was born circa 1874 in Co. Donegal and his father was John Kenny, the family belief is that his mothers name was O'Donnell.

He married Ellen Burke/Bourke 6/9/1905 in Westport, Mayo aged 30.
His fist child was born in Cushalogurt Kilmeena Co. Mayo in may 1906. His other children were born between june 07 and september 17 in Tubbercurry Co. Sligo and another in 1925 probably in Dublin.

I am not certain of this but believe he is recorded as J K in the 1901 census at house 1.2 in Aghagowla Beg, Kilmaclasser Aged 26. RIC constable.

He is recorded in the 1911 census at 46 Humbart Street, Tobercurry Aged 36.

He had left the RIC and moved to Dublin by 1932.

Any help appreciated.
CC

James was 6'6 height and Roman Catholic.

If his birth was Registered it would be in one of these districts

Thanks for the replies
I've done an extensive search of all the James Kennys in Donegal (including searching districts outside the county borders) and recorded civil and church records for a family in Castletown (Mother McCloskey) but nothing is adding up. I have also been through a lot of possibles for John Kennys of the right age using civil, church, census, and valuation records. I have no experience however with searching RIC records

From early 1903 Constable James Kenny is in court records for Ballinrobe
In 1901 a Constable James Kenny is in court records for Brockagh which would match your census find

Have you contacted the church where they married?
Their records may have his mother's name or a record of his baptism as it wasn't his home parish

myluck! Those court records fit perfectly. Although the barrack census form address is Aughagowla Beg, It is called the RI Constabulary barrack of Brockagh - bordering townlands either side of the river. This is very close to where he is buried and not very far from his wifes family home. Those court records would prove the census entry to be correct and gives a better timeline for the move to Ballinrobe. How would i get some of those records?

I have not contacted Myna Church, that is something i overlooked but must do, I will even be in the area sometime in spring. The NLI records for the Tuam diocese are extremely poor.

hallmark, While his occupation is recorded as farmers son (never understood why barrack forms record a seperate occupation), his rank is recorded there also as constable. I tried the link for dublincity.ie and there is a code 852090 for the appropriate years but i have no idea what to do from there.
