A quick look on familysearch didn't turn up anything matching your information.  Is it possible Ralph was on a merchant ship, as this would mean he wouldn't appear on military records.

It is best not to post duplicate requests on the boards - if you do post in the wrong place a post can be moved to the correct board.

According to the United States Mercantile Marine site, no merchant seaman with the name Ralph Munns, served in the USMM in WW2.
Suggest you follow the advice given by KGarrad

Hi
I have just completed a search similar to yours and I did find the US WW2 Navy Muster Rolls 1938-1949 very helpful. They are on Ancestry. If you don't have a subscription you can always access at your local library. You already have some information given here as well as on the US Lookup but the muster rolls give all the different ships as well as the rating/post.
Also on Ancestry are the Navy Cruise Book photos and I believe there is one for Ralph in 1953.
Going on from those sources you should be able to access his military records as long as it is 62 years since separation from the Navy. As he enlisted in 1936 perhaps he did a 20 year stint. My guy enlisted in 1937 so I can't acess his records until 1919. However I applied for some details through the Freedom of Information Act and received a large amount of information. (Summary of Service with Ships names, medals and any comendations etc). It was really worthwhile.  To find out how to do this I got the information from www.mymilitaryservicerecords.com. The turnaround was 3 weeks. I also used a company to access some other military records as they were so much faster than the Archives. Not a lot of difference in costs They have a lot of information on their website and I really recommend their service. The website is www.goldenarrowresearch.com
I managed to do this from the UK very easily. Hope this helps a bit.
Good luck
KK

Check the link already given on the USA board earlier today - you are duplicating.
