James Dyke between 1861-1882
« on: Wednesday 17 January 18 01:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, I'm not sure which board to put this in.

I am hoping someone will be able to help me either locate the death of my ancestor James Dyke or find him on either the 1871 or 1881 census.

At the time of the 1861 census James is lodging with his son Frederick at 90 Sydney Street, All Saints, Poplar [Findmypast, Ancestry etc - ref RG09/306/64/26 - he is at the very bottom of the page]. He is aged 60 and a widower and his occupation is given as "carpenter". His place of birth is correctly stated as Weston Bampfylde.

I know he must have died before 1882 as one of his children was married in that year and on the marriage certificate he is described as "deceased". I have the marriage certificate for another child which took place a few years later, and again he is described as "deceased" [or "dead" in this case].

This leads me to suspect he died between 1861 [when he was on the census] and 1882[ish] [when he is described as 'deceased']. However I have not been able to find any possible sign of him on the census or in death records.

Can anyone help here?

Thanks in advance

Matt

The 1873 death amondg found looks good - but that person should be somewhere in 1871 to rule in or out.

Hiya

Yes that's right. I have a copy of the marriage entry for Narcissus Hewson Henry Dyke and Mary Ann Steward which shows that James is alive. So this would imply he died between 1864 and 1882.

Yes that's him. I think I put Frederick's name down by mistake. As you can see he is down as a widower.

Who was James wife please and children in case he was with one of them in 1871?

James Dyke's wife was Martha Huson/Hewson. She died in 1846 [June Qtr].

His son Alfred John Dyke was born in 1841 and died in 1848 in Stepney. James Dyke's daughter Martha Elizabeth Dyke married Joseph Murray in 1854 and these are my ancestors.

Another of James and Martha Dyke's daughters, Henrietta Augusta Dyke, married Basil Hunt in October 1859 in Stepney.

Here is a transcript of the details on the 1851 census [taken from another post I put up about the Dykes in 2006 see here www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=176164.9]

11 Swan Court, Mile End

James Dyke - Head - Widow - 50 - Carpenter - Weston Bamfylde, Somerset
Georgeina Dyke - Wife - 20 - STEPNEY, Middlesex
Henrietta  Dyke - Dau - 17 - STEPNEY, Middlesex
Frederick Dyke - Son - 12 - STEPNEY, Middlesex

HO 107 1553
St Peters, Tower Hamlets

Georgianna is described as James' "wife" however he is clearly shown as a "widower". Georgianna may well have been born in the Westminster area as the only candidate found so far that fits is a Georgianna Laura Dyke born in Westminster in 1826 and christened there in 1829.

This is what I know about the other children of James and Martha

Narcissus Hewson Henry Dyke married Mary Ann Steward [a widow, maiden name Abbott] in Shoreditch on 10 May 1864.

Frederick Edward Dyke married Eliza Figden in 1882 (she died in 1885) and he then married Alice Browning in 1888. By the time of his second marriage Frederick's father is described as Dead so we know he died between 1864.

From this last marriage it is clear he died between 1864 and 1888.

I don't have my Dyke tree to hand at the moment and I know there are a few other children and marriages.

I will update this post later on with more info.
