The Griffith family of Criccieth
« on: Friday 19 January 18 17:21 GMT (UK) »
I have been researching my mother's Welsh family, working back from my   G Grandmother Jane Griffith who was born in Dolbenmaen in 1836. Her father ended his days in Criccieth as a farmer living at Cefniwrch Bach, Criccieth (census 1891) He died before 1901. On the various census returns he was shown as having been born in 1806 at Bryncroes but I have unable to identify him and hence trace the family further back. I have also been unable to find his marriage to Ellen or Elinor of Dolbenmaen who was born around 1814. Any guidance or tips gratefully received!

Yes that is the family, thank you. Sorry I meant to say that Jane's father was Henry or Harry as recorded elsewhere. He doesn't figure in the 1841 census so far as I can tell. He was variously described a s a horse jockey or breaker but later called himself a farmer.

Many thanks for the kind welcome and also for the potential leads. Whilst I  understand the vagueness of our ancestors about dates of birth where they equally vague about where they were born or baptised?!

I am struggling as a new member to understand how to reply to specific comments so please forgive me! I have researched Eliseus who was a Master Mariner. Apparently his name confused the Board of Trade and I found a note explaining that Eliseus is the Welsh form of Elisha!

:) Well you live and learn, I see that in 1861 the family have a Sarah Griffith aged 8 if she is the Sarah Griffith Dec qtr 1853 Pwlheli her mothers maiden name was Williams

EDIT Possible late baptism for Sarah, 2nd September 1860 Criccieth Father Henry Mother Ellen
Also William Griffith 8th August 1847 Criccieth Father Henry Mother Ellen
Jane Griffith was baptised 19th July 1835 Dolbenmaen Father Henry Mother Ellen
Also from a Google search see that Ellis can be Elias or Elijah?
