Julia Anna Derwith
« on: Friday 19 January 18 20:16 GMT (UK) »
Julia Anna Derwith was married in Wales 1900 and the 1901 and 1911 census records show her being born in Dublin. She was born around 1875. When I have searched online family history sites the name Derwith is thin on the ground. Any suggestions where to look for her or the family Derwith would be gratefully received.

Hello,

Do you have the marriage certificate? If so, what is her father’s name?
Who did she marry?
Are any children registered with mmn Derwith?

Sorry it’s all questions.

Yes I have the marriage certificate, her father was Samuel Derwith who was a shoe maker. He is deceased at time of marriage in 1900 in Cardiff to Albert Garrett. On the 1911 census they record 4 children 1 died. Children Roy Albert 1901 twin Violet who died, Kenneth Wilfred 1907 and a Robert Ivor who is shown born 1900, all called Garrett, but this I believe is wrong as I have found a birth record for a Robert Ivor Derwith born 1897 in Cardiff district, 3 years before their marriage

Thank you.
It’s very strange isn’t it. I have been searching, as yourself, to no avail but will keep going.  :)

I have looked for the surname, first name 1873-1876 but nothing that resembles her in all sorts of records. Sorry.  :(

Given the rarity of the name, note that the South Wales Daily News of 19 August 1899 reported that a labourer called Robert Morgan, living at Penarth, was imprisoned for disobeying an order of the Court to support the illegitimate child of 'Julia Derwith'.

The court order was for 4s per week and the arrears stood at £11 10s 7d, so the arrangement had presumably been in place for at least a year.

Interesting news, gaffy.

In 1901 4971/94/20 baby Robert Derwith is boarding with a Pike/Langdon family.

1901 census Ireland shows the surname Derwin in Dublin  :-\ and a few other counties.

Wow!!  Gaffy what a great find, I am amazed as to how you find these records, thanks very much. I do not have the birth certificate but I will send for it now. How strange the son Robert Ivor is a boarder, confusing description for his age, and I do not recognise any connection with the Pike/Langdon family. In 1901 Julia had been married for a year so again strange why her son is not living with her when from this newspaper report the son was living with her before the marriage as she was seeking financial help from Robert Morgan. On the 1911 census Robert Ivor was living with his mother and his stepfather in Penarth with two more children born within the marriage under the name of Garrett.
It is strange that the Derwith name is not to be found except for Julia and Robert, perhaps she made up the name when she left Ireland or on arriving in Penarth Wales.
