Occupation on 1881 Census
« on: Friday 05 August 05 06:40 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Can anyone tell me what the occupation "hitcher" might be.  One of my possible relatives, who lived in Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan was listed this way in 1881.  His son's marriage certificate says he was a farrier (horse shoer).  I thought hitcher might be local 'slang' in South Wales?

Thanks,

hello,
I googled "Hitcher" and found this website with an explanation,
http://www.occupationalinfo.org/92/921667022.html
it is very comprehensive, but of course may not be at all anything to do with a local Welsh "slang" for an occupation.
Sorry I'm not in Wales so don't know that, others from Wales will help I'm sure.
Good luck
Newbie

According to "Gareth's Help Page" for Dyfed/Glamorgan genealogy (http://home.clara.net/tirbach/hicks3a.html#Occupations)

Hi Newbie and Prue,

Thanks so much for the prompt reply!  I think I can now rule out that particular David Thomas.  Ah well, one more down, 3 million to go!
