I only used the 'research' term because I thought I remembered seeing it on an order form downloaded from the GRO site, sorry.

It is no problem but a new member of staff would probably not have a clue what was meant by "research copy"
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Thank you for all those finds, dathai. James Whitty a brother was mentioned as George's NOK in the mariner's database you showed me
Next of Kin: James Whitty (b) 21 Rutland Cottages, Dublin.

Bridget was a paternal great aunt; I wonder where child George is buried? I wonder too if Bridget had been admitted to Grangegorman between child George's birth & death & he was living in Upper Abbey Rd with his father's family?

Do you think George seniors birth could be out by 7yrs
George Whitty born 10 May 1878 at Grangegorman To Martin and Ellen Mulcahy

Ellen Whitty nee Mulcahy widow married Simon Lynch in 1881
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1881/11010/8025622.pdf

Martin said his father George was deceased by 1877

Great, thanks. That all sounds likely for Martin, as George stated father Martin to be a clerk on his marriage in 1921. Strange that Ellen states she is a spinster [albeit Whitty alias Mulcahy] on marriage to Simon Lynch. I had looked at the newspaper archive & there are reports of coining in 1894 with a Martin Whitty 'a known thief' of Lower Tyrone St one of the accused, no age sadly. He got 7 months penal servitude. Obviously not George's father.

As to George's age, perhaps for some reason he lied consistently on enlistment into marine service. His actual birth DAY is near enough - registered as born on 10 May, shows 9 May on enlistment:
Whitty, George (Fireman) RS2 No.427150.
Born: 1885-05-09, Dublin, Co. Dublin, Ireland
Photo: f5
Voyages:
1919-07-28 British Sovereign ON 140319 of London (British Petroleum Co)
1920-03-01 Sheaf Mead (1919) ON 137072 of Newcastle (Souter, W A)
1920-12-01 New Georgia ON 140645 of Liverpool (Elder Dempster)

Whitty, George (Fireman) RS2 No.348108.
Born: 1885-05-09, Dublin, Co. Dublin, Ireland
Disch A No: 924912 Photo: f4
Next of Kin: James Whitty (b) 21 Rutland Cottages, Dublin.
Notes: Cancelled, Renewal No:427150
Voyages:1919-02-01 Santa Theresa ON 135578 of Liverpool (Roydon, Thos)

There is an unnamed male child born to this couple of 39 Queen St in Rotunda Hospital on 15 Mar 1881 - though it doesn't say Martin is deceased it does state his occupation is 'nil'. Martin died 12 Oct 1880 as you found.

I think this baby died at 8 hours old at the Rotunda.

The only suitable Ellen Lynch I can find in 1901 is a widow aged 50 with son Michael Lynch aged 27.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/North_City/Liffey_St__Lower/1332928/
and 1911

but I cannot find a birth of a Michael with mother Ellen.
ADDED:
A Simon Lynch died 1889 aged 36

dathai's find shows "Ellen Whitty nee Mulcahy widow married Simon Lynch in 1881"
This means she was married only 20 years
If she had a son Michael LYNCH in 1901 maybe he was actually her step-son or the age is out

I'll have a look...
