Victoria: William BEAGLEY, born 1828/29, Chichester, Sussex
« on: Tuesday 23 January 18 14:16 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

William BEAGLEY arrived as an "Exile" from Parkhurst Prison at Geelong aboard the Joseph Somes on 24/09/1847.

I am trying to validate whether or not he was the same person who married 27 year old Elizabeth DORMAN in 1867 and raised 5 children, Francis Hamilton (1869), Mary Ellen (1871), Sarah Edith (1873), Charles (1875) and "Mary" (1876).  The children were all born at Pitfield, Victoria, except for Francis Hamilton at Geelong.   He died in 1917 at Yarram, Victoria.

My major problem lies in the fact there were two unassisted passengers, both named William BEAGLEY, who arrived in Victoria in 1853 and 1854, the first aged 23 aboard the Northumbria and the second aged 24 aboard the Graham.   Confusing ??? ???

Can anyone help please.

His obituary says

"He was a native of Essex, England, and came to Australia when only 12 years of age"

1917 'MR. WILLIAM BEAGLEY.', Gippsland Standard and Alberton Shire Representative (Vic. : 1914 - 1918), 10 January, p. 2. , viewed 24 Jan 2018, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article121036756

Add:
The Sussex Criminal Register for William Beatley aka Beagley, trial date 4 July 1844, shows his age as 16
This gives a birth year of around 1828 which fits well with the January 1917 death aged 88

Thank you for that response........all three William BEAGLEY's are non-starters then.    Curious with a somewhat unusual name.   C'est la genealogie ::) ::)

I wouldn't rule the Yarram Beagley out yet - the age fits and the "came to Australia when only 12 years of age" could just be saying he came out when very young and the "12 years" has decreased with retelling

William Beagley, aged 23 arr. 1853 on Northumbria , with Maud Maria aged 23, was a bricklayer from Middlesex

add - and I think it also reads "infant born on board"

edit - the www.prov.vic.gov.au site shows her as Maria

Sound advice.   The age 12 could be as euphemistic as the "Early Settler" that was popular in many obituaries.

Just an aside..........At the time I lived in Melbourne as a £10 pom, when God was a boy, having a convict ancestor was a "stain" and not quite the more desirable progenitor favoured in contemporary "down under." ;D

There's a William Beagley and family that travels to New Zealand per Albion in 1864.

From Woodville Examiner on NZ Papers Past - Maria wife of William Beagley died in 1901 aged 72 and William in 1902 aged 73

add - note that some online family trees link this 1853 arrival to the Yarram Beagley, which now seems incorrect
