WW! War Memorial question

Seen several listing dead in WW1 as 1914 to 1919 rather than 1918 as you would expect.
 Is this to honour the dead who died perhaps in 1919 as a result of wounds they received in action before the cease fire ?
Just come across a War Memorial in Hale and two soldiers (Wise died 1920 and Hancock died 1921)

That's a particularly good spot Frank.  It also addresses the other question that often comes up - why wasn't great uncle Willy on the memorial.  Who was commemorated was a matter for local committees of the great and the good and simply, if they didn't know about Willy, then he didn't get on the memorial.  A newspaper search on "War Memorial Committee" in the 1920s brings up reports on a number of aspects, including appeals for funds, advertisements for relatives to come forward with names and discussions about whether men who died from disease should be included (decisions both yes and no).

The Commonweath War Graves Commission takes 3 Aug 1921 as the final date for commemoriation - partly to include those dying of wounds/sickness in the post war period but also to cater for the men who were still fighting in Irag, Russia etc after the Armistice in Europe.

War memorial committees where a law unto themselves. I suspect that many added men dying post war - up to the date the memorial was erected.

The date was decided on the basis on the Termination of the Present War (Definition) Act of 1918 which was agreed by all the Governments of the Commonwealth.
