at the Herefordshire Lent Assizes of 1839, John Caldwell 32, late of the parish of Kingsland, cooper was found guilty of stealing a smock frock and sentenced to 6 weeks hard labour, the first solitary. The judge commented "it was melancholy thing to see a person of the character and appearance of the prisoner standing at the bar for an offence of this description".

1851 census for King St, Brynmawr, Llangattock, Breconshire HO107/2490 folio 219 pg 32 shows a lodger enumerated as John Caldael aged 50 cooper b. Leominster who may be your John.
