George Martin Stewart, Police Constable in Hokitika
« on: Thursday 25 January 18 16:11 GMT (UK) »
Thanks to info supplied to me in my post on Nellie Beaumont (nee Stewart, born 1877) I have more details about Nellie and her sister Miriam Stewart, born 1875.  From Nellie's death certificate it states that her mother was Ann Marsden.  Ann's death is in the newspapers but I cannot find a marriage for George and Ann, a birth for Ann nor a death for George.  Ann died in 1877, so potentially in childbirth, but I cannot find a second marriage for George either.  George's retirement from the Police is also noted in the newspaper in 1909.
Has anyone any more tips please?  Thanks

Added, as it gives some background for George, which may assist in the search for further information.   ;)

Update :

Have now found what appears to be a second wife for George.    Lots more records to check though to establish what became of George.

Would the NZ Gazettes contain more information about George being that he was employed by the crown?  Or postings for Police?  Or even an obituary?

Hi wscroley

So it has already been established (via a newspaper notice) that Ellenor Ernestine STEWART (aka Nellie) who wed Arthur Edwin BEAUMONT in 1897, was the daughter of a George Martin STEWART of the Police Force at Kanieri, Hokitika, earlier at Newtown, Wellington.

For some reason, George dropped the use of his second name "Martin" sometime before he married again in 1894 to Catherine FORSTER.   Catherine was born 1872 in Hokitika and in the 1911 Will of her father, Matthew FORSTER she was described as "my daughter Catherine (nee FORSTER) the wife of George STEWART of Hokitika, ex-Policeman"...

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L94R-LC1Q?i=71&cc=1865481

And I can confirm also that the George STEWART who died at Hokitika, (record already given here in Reply # 4), is buried with his wife, Catherine STEWART, who died aged 72 years in May 1944.

In your thread on the Limerick board, I think I recall you saying that George's family had been Protestant ?
Going by the burial records for Orowaiti Cemetery, Hokitika, as well as showing that George and Catherine share Plot # 6190,  Block 289, it also notes George's denomination as "Anglican" and Catherine's as "Roman Catholic".
