House search in Bagnelastown in the 1850s
« on: Thursday 25 January 18 18:24 GMT (UK) »
Looking for some help in locating a house called Laurel Lodge in or around Bagenalstown in the 1850s. I have located obituaries for both my GGG Grandparents John D1858 & Mary Jones D1860 as living in this house. They lived all or most of their married life in Baltinglass, Co Wicklow up to the Griffins Valuation. So they only moved here a short time before they died. One of their Daughters was married to Ashmores of Corries House. Could it be near this address. It's a common name for a house so may not be easy to locate but any help is greatly appreciated.

You have no townland?

Do you know where they were buried?

No townland. Both obituaries just said Laurel Lodge Bagenalstown and both are buried in Hacketstown, Co Carlow. The same Obituaries gave their previous full Baltinglass Address. So I know they are my ancestors.

I'm getting the same result, the Lodge hallmark posted and another near the Corn Mill which later is called Eastwood and the building beside the  corn mill becomes The Lodge.

I had a look around the countryside but I couldn't see it.

I looked up the OS maps too but no luck. Possibly needs some local knowledge to identify the house if it even still exists.

The Irish Times, 4 May 1875, advertised the the sale of the interest in the lease of Laurel Lodge -
"a very compact slated cottage residence with 6 Irish acres of land .... The house, which is beautifully situated an English mile from Carlow ...".

Almost all the references in the newspapers refer to the Fitzmaurice family

There's a Fitzmaurice family at Dunleckney on the 1911 Census.

I think that the Advertisment is for a different house, which happens to share name. English mile from Carlow would not have Bagnelstown address
Modern name for Bagnelstown is Muine Bheag, most locals still call it Bagnelstown.
