I had wondered whether the childrens baptisms would give a clue as to which parish we would find the marriage.

Marriages for the period you are after are not transcribed onto lancashireopc for Westhoughton

Hello
I found a marriage between a Sarah Brown and a John Snape on lancs opc. at Ainsworth but this was in 1821 after Joseph would have been born.

Yes, I think the Ainsworth marriage is the  right one.  If they were not married when their son was born,  I hope I  eventually get to see the original record of John's baptism where the minister might have made a note in the margin.
Many thanks for your help

It is possible that Joseph was a child of just one of them to a previous relationship. :-\

That is good because at least it eliminates them  ;D

I was more concerned that in the absence of Westhoughton registers for the period online the Ainsworth marriage was being accepted without Westhoughton registers being checked.  ???  We all know how easy it is to follow the wrong family  :)

I am still having reservations about Ainsworth although Sarah Browns  brother Adam is living in Harwood by 1841 with second wife Ann. They married in Bolton.
Sarahs sister Catherine marries a John Dean at Horwich 1838 and is living there in 1841 with family and mother Alice . Sarah Browns parents Adam and Alice are both buried at Parish Church Horwich.
