Thomas Forrester White.
« on: Monday 29 January 18 04:49 GMT (UK) »
I have an entry for the birth of Thomas Forrester White from Scotlands People that says Posthumous son of Thomas White and Margaret Cockburn. Born May 20th and baptized June 2nd 1805.
Does this mean that he only lived a short while?
I can't find a death for him so far.
I would think that posthumous means still-born.
Thanks,  Sandie.

I would think that posthumous means that his father had died before he was born?

I agree with KGarrad.  My great-aunt was born four months after her father died - she was his posthumous daughter and died aged 76.

Stillborn babies are born dead, and it is not possible to baptise any dead person.  Your baby Thomas lived at least 13 days.

His father died at some time in the nine months before the birth.

Thank-you both. I hadn't thought that his father might have died as I don't have a death date for him.
I did wonder how the baby could be "posthumous" and be baptized some time after the birth.
