Mounseys at Upperby Cemetery
« on: Monday 29 January 18 10:10 GMT (UK) »
I was wondering if anyone had access to Upperby Cemetery records as I was looking for any Mounseys buried between 1840, and 1860s.

If anyone can help that would be great thanks

Was Carlisle the RD for Upperby?

If so - there are only 18 Mounsey deaths in a 20yr period on freebmd 1840-1869.

Have you identified the christian names of the relevant Mounsey's from freebmd as they may be buried elsewhere

Hi CaroleW

Yes Upperby was under Carlisle RD. My Mounseys came from Upperby so I thought that would be a good place to start to see what, if any, Mounseys were buried there.

Many municipal cemeteries opened in the mid 1850s following the Burial Act of 1853.

Before that, I think burials were in churchyards.
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Upperby Cemetery records as I was looking for any Mounseys buried between 1840, and 1860s.

According to a list here http://www.carlisleshistory.co.uk/page45.htm Upperby Cemetery only opened in 1881.

So, as Geoff has said, before that you would have to look at church burial records

Yes Rosie I have acces to the newsaper archives although fantasic they are a bit hit and miss for the time periods.

That's a good point Geoff and Jen about the Burial Act. Which I hadn't considered.

Although the municipal cemetery at Upperby didn’t open until 1880s.  There is a church graveyard there which is older, so could still be buried there.  The much larger Carlisle Cemetery open in the 1850s so this is another possible burial place.

I could check the records but it wouldn’t be until next week.  If any of the 18 that died in that time frame in Carlisle are relevant I could also check Carlisle Cemetery records.

St John the Baptist Church in Upperby - some records are transcribed on the NBI but nothing for Mounsey
