Hi Gadget,
I've done the same search with a few years each side. On marriage he may have been reducing his age especially if marrying a younger bride and as you say age at death was given by somebody else.
I didn't find anything in Bangor, Gwynedd. A few possibles in Wrexham area ( includes Bangor on Dee) as follows:
James Lewis 1852 Q3 mmn Johns
James Lewis 1860 Q3 mmn Thomas
James Lewis 1861 Q3 mmn Roberts
James Lewis 1861 Q4 mmn Griffiths
William James Lewis 1860 Q1 mmn Rogers

Most of the 1861 census is missing for Wrexham making elimination difficult.

Ray

One thing Coleen said was that he arrived in early 70s, so would think he was born early- mid 50s or with parents.

Online tree has mmn as Williams  :-\

Hi,
The only James Lewis I can find in the 1861 census that fits most of the information you have given is in Orford in Suffolk.
Household          Role        Sex   Age   Birthplace
Henry Lewis    Head    M    50    Sudbourne, Suffolk
Susan Lewis    Wife      F    48    Orford, Suffolk
Betsey Lewis    Daughter    F    13    Orford, Suffolk
Sarah Lewis    Daughter    F    10    Orford, Suffolk
James Lewis    Son      M    8    Orford, Suffolk
George Lewis    Son            M    6    Orford, Suffolk

A tree has the Orford Susan as Susan Smy.

Added - got some strange info from these trees - all about the Smys

The 1851 is very interesting for your Orford family, Roy.

HO107/1802/478/15
Orford, Plomesgate

Henry Lewis, unm, 39, fisherman, b. Sudbourne
Susan Smy, housekeeper, unm, Servant, b. Iken
Elizabeth Smy, d, 9
Henry -do-, s, 7
Mary A -do-,d, 5
Betsey -do-, d, 3
Sarah -do-, d, 11 months

Children all b. Orford

So Susan’s mn was Smy as some of the online trees have it!

Might be worth looking for a James Smy as I've not yet found a  marriage for Henry and Susan.

Not certain at all, Collene. It was just recorded on one of the online trees. He seems to have just arrived from nowhere  :-\

When do you first pick him up in NZ?
