Searching for John Drake and Jane Stanesby from Sussex
« on: Thursday 01 February 18 08:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello. I am searching for information regarding John Drake, Sr. and his wife, Jane Stanesby (b. 1771) from Sussex. The information I have found is that their five children (including my 11th great grandmother) were all baptized in Oving, Sussex where their father served as rector of the local Anglican parish at that time (1670-1682).  I am searching for biographical information about John and Jane. Any information is appreciated.  I don't pay money to FindMyPast or Ancestry, so they aren't helpful, and I cannot find anything via FamilySearch.  Any assistance is appreciated.

Can you just confirm some dates as you originally suggest that Jane was born 1771 but then you say that their father served as rector from 1670-1682.

To clarify: was John Drake Sr the rector at Oving for the period 1670-1682?  I doubt very much if his wife could have been born in 1771 then.

John and Jane married at Oving in 1668.  He is a vicar and she is shown as from Elvetham Hampshire, according to the Sussex Marriage index.  She is the only Stanesby entry on the index which would imply that that family are not a Sussex one.

We mentioned the will of John Drake of Oving previously.
Proved 1682, Chichester Consistory Court
Well, here it is. Very heavy on the religion!

I apologize for the information about her date.  I have no dates for Jane Stanesby.  I will take a look at the information which has been provided today.  I knew that about the religion connection (as I mentioned).  Thank you for your help.

Takes up most of the will. Some useful stuff at the very end.

jonw65:  It's true.  This is a very interesting will even for an Anglican vicar.  Now my searching is moving to Gloucestershire and Hampshire since their own real connection to Sussex is their children.

Lincolnshire may be worth considering for John
Looking at the Clergy Database
http://db.theclergydatabase.org.uk/jsp/search/index.jsp

it says John Drake, Oving, graduated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge
A promising entry in Alumni cantabrigienses may be John Drake, Emmanuel, B.A. 1665-6, M.A. 1675. Of Lincolnshire.
https://archive.org/stream/alumnicantabrigipt1vol2univiala#page/64/mode/2up

They've actually mentioned John Drake the clerk and the will of 1682, but that is written on the J.D. entry two up, though with the phrase "one of these names" (in any case that John looks completely wrong on dates and was at Kings)

Also if you look at the names John mentions at the end of his will, could one of them be Keal? Not that I'm certain!
Brother Thomas Keal and his wife
Brother Josiah Keal(e) and his wife
as well as Ann the relict of my brother Joseph Drake.

There were Drakes (Johns and Josephs) and Keales in Grantham in Lincolnshire.
A couple of baptisms there in the 1660's to Josiah Keale/Keele
Even a Joseph Drake - Elizabeth Keale marriage in 1641, but whether they had a son John I don't know.
