Look up request St Mary's Church Cheadle
« on: Friday 02 February 18 10:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I was wondering if anybody could help me, with regards to a search of the parish register for St Mary's Church Cheadle.
I am looking for my Great,Great,Great Grandmother's name.
My searches have pointed me to a family link to the church.
My Great Great Grandmother Sarah Arden was born in around 1832 in Bosden Cheshire.  So I am unable to search the BMD for her birth. She was married in the church to her husband Samuel Moss in 1851. Samuel is not related to me even though my Great Grandfather was named Walter Moss. Walter was born long after Samuel died.

In 1840 my Great,Great,Great Grandfather William Ardern Sarah's father married Sarah Adshed in the church. My research shows he was a widower,  I am unable to find a death certificate for his previous wife who was Sarah's mother and my Great,Great,Great Grandmother.

So my thinking is that William might have married his first wife my Great,Great,Great Grandmother in the church possibly between the years of 1820-1830

Or I dont know what baptism records contain, but could my Great,Great,Great Grandmother's maiden name be recorded on them, if her daughter my Great,Great Grandmother Sarah Arden was baptised in the church.

I am unable to visit the church myself as I live in Australia. I would appreciate any advice.
Tracy

I know and I can't seem to find Sarah in 1851.  1851 census taken on 30 March 1851, and Samuel and Sarah were married in March quarter 1851  :-\

Some kind soul has added a postem to the FreeBMD entry, giving the place of marriage as St Mary, Cheadle but doesn't give the date  :-X  Venue confirmed from CheshireBMD.  FindMyPast have Cheshire records, but nothing for Cheadle  :-X

1861 Census:  RG9/2573 folio 63 page 18
Hatherton Lane, Norbury, Hazel Grove
William Ardern - 58 coal miner,born Bosden
Sarah Moss - 29, widow, Silk hand loom weaver, born Bosden
Ann Ardern - 14 - daughter
James Moss - 9, grandson, born Norbury
Elizabeth Moss - 5, granddaughter, born Norbury

There is death in 1854 for Samuel Moss, aged 24 - Stockport District, and two birth registrations in Stockport District - 1851 for James and 1854 for Elizabeth - both with mmn of Ardern.

Hi Ladies
Thanks for posting the information. I already have all the information in your posts. The Sarah in the census is my Great,Great Grandmother Williams daughter. The boy Walter is my Great Grandfather he along with two other children was born after Sarah's husband died and on their birth cert there no named father.

The person I am trying to find is Sarah's mother who was William's first wife. All the information on this lady will be before census and bmd records as she seems to have passed away before 1837 hence the question about the parish records.

Hi Tracy,

Firstly a very warm welcome to RootsChat!

There is a marriage on the Cheshire Parish Register Project website as follows:

The marriage took place in Cheadle.

4th July 1830

William Ardern to Hannah Edgerley by banns
Both made their mark with an X
Both of Cheadle Parish
Witnesses were: Henry Smith & John Ridings

I can find neither a baptism for Sarah Ardern or a burial for Hannah Ardern (Nee' Edgerley).

The above might well be the marriage for Sarah's parents.

Hope this helps anyway.

Kind regards

David
