I thought I had a funny (or unusual) name in a Canadian census record with the christian name Banfree!  It wasn't until I checked and found the original entry, that it became obvious that the name was Winifred!!  I don't know where the person who transcribed the census had dreamed up Banfree - it was perfectly clearly written as Winifred!  Well to my eyes anyway!  Many others on Ancestry have her as Banfree as well, so obviously they didn't check the original either!

Probably took it as gospel from a little green leaf!  Shoddy research!  ;D

Nearly finished my own list ..will have to put in order
I think great grandmother lottie may have caused mistakes on her documents she gave herself a middle name and then used it as 1st name to.marry legitimately. No wnder she was so hard to.trace .

Have been colecting others facts and will run a storytelling  " funny families  great grandparents " event in my local.libary this Sat .

Not blood-related but same generation of the family...Agustus (not Augustus) with a son called Agathos.  Everyone else had 'normal' Victorian names.

And a great-uncle was rumoured to be spy during WWI in Hungary, was probably interned for the duration, ended up being murdered in the USA (his obit in the paper terms it a 'tragic accident' but it couldn't have been...shotgun ended up over a hedge and 20 feet away from the body) in 1929.

Makes my life quite dull really... ???

brigidmac:  Yes, I know about him and his life while he was living here (and in the USA a lot).  It's his WWI experiences that we are having a problem with.  He married a Hungarian girl and had 3 children, all born in Hungary; I believe that she took them back to Hungary with her when James died.  Then, of course, 10 years later it was WWII so who knows what happened then?  By that time, the children would have been adults and thoroughly back into Hungarian culture...I can find no surname so far to say that the son had married and produced children.  Research is still ongoing though and I am ever hopeful :) :)
