Cycling Club
« on: Monday 05 February 18 15:12 GMT (UK) »
My friend has a small bugle with the inscription West Stanley Cycling Club.  There is no date inscribed.  It was made by Woods and Co who were musical instrument manufactures situated in Westgate Road Newcastle upon Tyne  I am unable to find any reference to the cycling club as to when it was in existence.  I have quite a lot of information about Woods and Co but would like to know if anyone has ever heard of the cycling club in West Stanley.

I've put OH onto the hunt - he's an ex racing cyclist and has lots of contacts all over the cuntry.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

There is mention of "West Stanley Clarion Cycling Club" in the Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail of 17 February 1949.

My Aunt was a member of the West Stanley Clarion Cycling Club before and during WW2.  Unfortunately she is no longer with us so I can't ask her about it but I think its meetings were held in the Imperial Hotel on Stanley Front Street.  If you look on the facia of that building, you will see the emblem of the Cyclist Touring Club is still there, so it might be a good place to start

Just as a matter of interest - your bugle is not a bugle; it is actually a CLARION!

You can see one on the Clarion Cycle Club badge at https://www.flickr.com/photos/23666168@N04/9309343632

The Clarion Cycle Club was also a very left wing political organisation committed to healthy activity and Socialist propaganda - that last word is from their own description and is not mine.  Look on Wikipedia, I believe they are having a bit of a revival.
