White Conduit Street
« on: Wednesday 07 February 18 15:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi
My grandmother and her Edinburgh family lived at 16 White Conduit Street, Islington for about 30 years up to 1901. I have got the photograph which shows the children going towards Chapel St.
No 1 is on the left at Chapel St and 14 is the pub on the corner behind the children.
Was 16 on the right hand side and are there any old photographs of the street.

Peter

There is a book on eBay Islington archive pictures for £2.84 might be worth a look.

Looking at censuses and street directories, the house numbering was consecutive, not odds and evens. It is not clear from the directories where number 16 was.

Numbering from Chapel Street, it seems probable that 1-15 were on the eastern side (14 being the Spanish Patriots pub). It is possible that 16 was there too but that is around the point where the numbering goes across the road and back up towards Chapel Street.

Thanks All

Looking at 1921 business addresses posted by Shaunj that 16 is probably between Mantell St and Warren St. As it was a home it would be above the shops.

The trouble is that Mantell Street is on the eastern side of White Conduit Street and Warren Street is on the western side. 16 WCS could be either side.

The Patriots pub (number 14) was on the corner of Mantell Street https://goo.gl/7icP5K

But the 1899 directory isn't so clear on the point. Suggests 15 could be on the western side.
