Stepney Parish, London
« on: Thursday 08 February 18 22:57 GMT (UK) »
I have noticed many times that Stepney Parish, London is connected with a great number of early immigrants to America. This is then cited as a birthplace by those doing family genealogy. I wonder if Stepney Parish is from where they embarked for America or registered to do so, and may not be where they were born or from. Does anyone have any incite?

Welcome to Rootschat
I would say, as Stepney is near Bethnal Green, Bow and is in the East End of London, it is more likely that the early immigrants were born or were resident there.

I have no special knowledge but most of the emigrants I have found embarked from Liverpool, with a few from Southampton. I believe Liverpool was the main port for those heading for America. Very many people migrated to London from all over the UK, so many people born in Stepney may have parents who were born elsewhere, as browsing the census will show.

Thank you for your input. The number of immigrants who appear to be from London surprises me, but probably from ignorance. Since most who came to Massachusetts were "non-conformers," I am ignorant of what was happening in the London area with respect to non-conformity. The other suggestion that, of course, many in London came from other areas of England is obviously true. The fact that Stepney had many docks in the area, gave rise to my thought that they may have embarked from there and then gone to Liverpool or elsewhere for the final phase of their voyage.

I forgot to mention that the ships on board of which the individuals I am interested in were passengers are recorded as having sailed from London. That is what gave rise to my question of the Stepney Parish connection, and also that Stepney was I have read an important dock area.

I think has rosie99 said, the time frame is crucial. If you are talking of the 17 century then there was shipping from that area of Stepney which I think was a larger parish then.

Thank you for the interest. I am talking about the 1630's and the height of the Puritan migration specifically to Massachusetts.
