Tennant Farmers ?

I have a christening record that shows  the father as Tennant in Fogo, also the 2 witnesses. Does this mean they were tenant farmers.

In my (limited) experience, yes.
A search of newspapers may just yield more information - perhaps sale price of cattle at auction, a ploughing match result, or, as I found, the family giving up the tenancy and the resulting displenishing sale.

Have you checked other children's baptisms to see what they say about occupation or abode or origins of their father? Also maybe his marriage and death? Some may give further information or call him a "farmer" for example.

What date was this baptism?

"In" a tenant, "Of" the owner & "At" a servant there!

Skoosh.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I`ve just taken a look on SP, instead of my transcription, just to be sure.

It says Christopher Tait Tennant in Fogo, also the 2 witnesses were also tenants, so I`m taking that to mean a tenant farmer as Skoosh says. By a strange coincidence on the same page there is a record of Christopher Tait tennant being a witness at another baptism.

The baptism is for Anne Tait 1736 but  I have not yet found his marriage, although on Family Search there are baptisms for another 9 children.

Perhaps you could have a look at those baptisms on Scotland's People. Information given on baptisms can vary so maybe you could try a couple and see what they tell you?
