David - you need to do the marriage search under 'Parish Marriages' not 'Civil Marriages'.

Hi
The new Gro index does indeed give Mary Ann's maiden name as Lee.

Spencer Jones birth was registered Mar 1867 Pontypool s of Edward and Sarah Jones nee Crook.
Actually born 30 Dec 1866.

That  marriage 30 June 1889 Ht LLanfair
Spencer is 22 tin mill man s of Edward a tin mill man
Mary 19 d of Michael Lee labourer
Both bridge and groom of Nantyglo
wit Joseph and Miriam Sainsbury

Type in Spencer Jones marriage 1889 an it brings up  2 results click on the top one Monmouth marriages camera icon on the results page.

Mary is 19 in June 1889 so probably registered Sep 1869 Bedwellty ,mother Fitzgerald.

The Lees in Bedwalty seem to be
1881 census 42 Union st
Catherine Lee widow 45 Ireland
Patrick 16 son labourer Ireland
Morris 14 labourer  Ireland
Mary 12 scholar Tredegar
Michael 10 Tredeger

1871 7 Red Lion Square
Lawrence Lee 37 lab in ironworks Ireland
Catherine 34 Ireland
Patrick 6 scholar Dowlais Glamorgan
Morrisey 4
Mary 2 Tredeger.

Lawrence died Dec 1880 Bedwelty age 45.

Also 1871 45 Bridge St
Michael Lee 27 boot maker Ireland
Sarah 31 bootbinder Tredeger
Mary E(lizabeth) 7 daughter
Lida 6
Basheera 4
Sarah 2

Sarah senior started life as Miss Owen/Owens.

1881 Cross St
Michael Lee 47 shoemaker Waterford
Sarah 41 Tredeger
Mary E 18
Lidia 16
Catherine 14
Sarah 12
Alice 10
Thomas Owens 66 widower father in law  born Haverfordwest

None of which matches that 1891 census you have which must be them.
There is a possible birth entry for Margaret Lee born  Mar 1881 at Newport ,mother Stokes.

Sorry

Gosh I'm confused on who is Mary Ann Lee's father.

Her marriage entry says Michael Lee, but the census returns seem to imply that Mother Catherine was married to Lawrence?

Am I missing something?

Regards

David

David - the family do not appear under the name 'Lee' on census before 1891 so don't think the Mary Ann you've found with mother a Catherine married to Lawrence is the right one.

It's all very strange - I have found a marriage entry for a Michael Lee in Sept.1870 Bedwelty where possible brides are an Ann Phillips, Margaret Gibbon but details of the marriage do not appear to be online unfortunately.   As Michael a widower in 1891 looked for deaths but nothing for an Ann Lee in the timeframe but there is a Margaret Lee bc.1850 who died Dec.qtr.1888 Bedwelty.

Hi Annette

Gulp

Well I suppose its good policy to go back to solid and ground. I've ordered the birth certificate for my grandmother Phyllis Williams b. 1911 to see if it gives me anything concrete on her parents (Spencer Jones and Mary Anne Lee I think). I guess my next step would be to get their marriage certificate. Unless you have any other advice.

Thanks

David

Hi try that 1870 marriage  micheal lee and birth 1870 mary lee bedwellty mother gibbon. The death for margaret lee nee gibbons that annettd found 1888 looks good as marys mom.   Ciderdrinker
