Regarding his supposed birthplace of “Farley”, Northumberland, this just seems to be a mistranscription arising in the indexing of the 1891 census.

What the post-marriage censuses actually say about James is:

1881: James Brown, 30 b Tinley Northumberland (RG11/3091/121/10)
1891: James Brown, 39 b Tinley Northumberland (RG12/2471/29/3)
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)

Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)

Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

Has James been found in the 1901 census?  He is not at home with Emily in Leamington, but she is still enumerated as married.

I presume the census was 31st March - that James Brown I posted died in The Royal Liverpool Infirmary and was buried 14th May 1901 - could he have been in that Hospital on 31st March ?  of course we don't know for sure yet what year James died in Liverpool until Janice informs us  ???
added - just seen Kays post - looks like him - so that means the one I found is probably wrong

I have been wondering if James's birthplace of Tinley might be the hamlet of Tynley in the parish of Ellingham,  Northumberland??

Although the age of this James is not ideal I did find this family in Tynley in 1851 in the Reg District of Belford

George Brown 25 b Scotland  Farm Steward
Margaret Brown    26 Scotland
James Brown 4 Months  b Ellingham

I found a birth for James on the GRO Birth index
JAMES  BROWN    Dec Qrter 1850 BELFORD UNION  VoL 25  Page 254 Mothers maiden name Litgartwood

I notice that James Brown and Emily had a son called Albert Litgartwood Brown born 1882 in Leamington Spa and wonder if the couple gave James mother's maiden name which is rather unusual  :-\
