Military Help with Gilbert Bell
« on: Thursday 15 February 18 18:42 GMT (UK) »
Right one of my ancestors named Gilbert C. Bell was in the Marine Corp. I don't know exactly when he joined or left the service. It was during the period of WW1. I do not know if he went overseas, but I did find a passenger list for him.

SS Lancastrian Date March 28 1917 Sailing from London
Gilbert Bell Occupation: Horseman
Where going Milwaukee, WI
It looks like Cowbr Sanatorium the writing is terrible

So I'm confused. I know the US wasn't actively involved in WW1 till 1918. Yet we still had soldiers over there, before then. So is this him coming back from the war or is this just him coming back from a trip in Europe. But why would he be going to a sanatorium?

Don't think this can be your man - the one arriving 1917 was American, last permanent residence Pittsburg.

As you correctly say the U.S. Marine Brigade weren't in Europe in March 1917.
The 1st. Americans arrived in June & that was only a small number.
