Barrow Record Office - St Bees (4 look ups) Ulverston (1) and Hawkshead (1)
« on: Thursday 15 February 18 20:06 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone visits the Barrow Record office and would be prepared to help.

I believe that they have Parish records for St Bees, Ulverston and Hawkshead.

I am seeking a look up of actual records that I know about, hoping for additional snippets/clues. I am very happy to pay the cost of a photo session licence at the Barrow Office, which I think is £4.60, if any look up does reveal any information over and above that recorded below.

Just for future reference there are Ulverston records on the Lancashire On Line Parish Clerk website, because it used to be in Lancashire.

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

The record for John Ronson is brief and you have probably seen it elsewhere;

Marriage: 14 Jul 1776 St Mary, Ulverston, Lancashire, England
John Ronson - Ulverston
Agnes Garnet - Ulverston
    Married by Licence
    Register: Marriages 1771 - 1780 from the Bishops Transcripts, Entry 101
    Source: LDS Film 1040491
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

apart from the names of the witnesses, there is unlikely to be any more in the register than you already have for marriages of this date. More information is given after 1837.

The situation for baptisms prior to 1813 is very similar, addresses and occupation weren't routinely recorded.

Are you trying to establish something specific?

Hi

The bond does survive and can be seen as part of Lancashire marriages and Banns on Anc*

John Ronson a spade maker and James Morris husbandman both of the parish of Ulverston and County of Lancaster.

John Ronson aged 22 years and upwards and Agnes Garnett spinster aged 22 years and upwards.

Dated : 13 July 1776

Both men sign the document too.

BIG thanks to Claire for pointing me to the place where I found the actual image of the bond that has since been lost at Lancashire Records Office.

Hi Dawn,
Thank you. Yes, this all relates to my RONSON research which is explained in a sepearate thread a couple of notches down on the Cumberland look up board. I got very lucky with the last set of Parish records from Dalston Cumberland where I got an occupation, a hint at a grandfather's name and, importantly, infomation that parents of a baptised child had a Gretna wedding. I also found out that the mother had been married previously and her interim surname. I suppose I am asking a lot to try and get so lucky twice.

Just before anyone rushes off to Barrow Archive Centre, the original information is a little wide of the mark

1) St. Bees records are housed at Whitehaven Archives Centre, ref YPR 42
2) Ulverston records are indeed at Barrow Archive Centre, ref BPR 2
3) Hawkshead records are held at Kendal Archive Centre, ref WPR 83.

Thank you Clearly,

I have been misinformed. Moreover, I now have the Ulverston marriage courtesy of Claire. I think I best end this thread as complete and have a re think. Perhaps I will work on things a little further, double check all my information and maybe post requests for Kendal and Whitehaven look ups when I am more certain of my facts.

Thanks again to all.

Neil.
