"withdrawn" on a marriage / banns OPR - what does it mean?
« on: Tuesday 20 February 18 01:46 GMT (UK) »
First time I've ever seen this. "(withdrawn)"
Any ideas what it means in this instance?
I know the couple had several children after the date of this entry (1836 in Glasgow), so it doesn't appear they decided not to marry.

I thought perhaps it applied to the previous entry, but the entire document is pretty much spaced out between entries.

The "withdrawn" certainly goes with the following entry. The couple obviously gave their names up for marriage then changed their minds. You were supposed to marry within forty days of giving up your names. Maybe they weren't quick enough and the kirk withdrew them.

Sorry, I have only now noticed your reply.

Yes, that would seem to be the case.

What's odd is that they subsequently had various children together, yet there is no trace of them having gone through the process at a later date, prior to the children being born.

On the baptismal records of the children, they are referred to as "lawful son" or lawfull daughter".

"Lawful" certainly means that they were married.

Yeah, I know.  It's an odd one.
