JONES, JONES, and more JONES - Ruabon
« on: Friday 23 February 18 15:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Again, I am stumped on my great-grandfather Ellis's tree.

My ancestor Jane Jones was born in 1825. On her 1847 marriage cert (to Charles Rogers, shoemaker, in Ruabon), her father is William Jones, collier. I found her baptism in 1825 to William Jones, collier, and wife Elizabeth, born in Street Issa, Ruabon.

I BELIEVE I found her parents' marriage: 6 Dec 1819, By Banns and consent of parents [Elizabeth would be under 21], both of this parish, witnesses Edward Davies and Sarah X Davies, bride and groom marked X --

Son Philip born 13 days later. The couple are both in the census until *1881, then I lose sight of them, assume they died but haven't found their death records. The census puts William at 1795, born in Ruabon, and Elizabeth at 1798, also born in Ruabon.

There's a huge number of Joneses in Ruabon (and, well, everywhere) and I'm really stumped on how to move farther back without identifying the wrong people.

Any help or guidance is really appreciated!

It can be difficult, Hilary. I started off with no Jones in my family until I got back to great grandparents  and then they just grew!

I will have a  look at the Ruabon records produced by Clwyd FHS as the records showing on FindMyPast/FS are not always accurate/reliable. Also, given that Street Is(s)a was in the Rhos area, they might well be non-conformist.

It might take a while.

Do you have the census refs for William and Elizabeth? Note that the 1841 census is missing for the Ruabon area.

Hi Gadget, thank you as always for your help!
Here's the 1851 reference:
Town   Morton Above
County/Island   Denbighshire
Country   Wales
Registration district   Wrexham
Sub-registration district   Ruabon
ED, institution, or vessel   2m
Piece   2503
Folio   281
Page number   2
Household schedule number   6

And the 1871:
Civil parish   Moreton
Ecclesiastical parish   Rhos
Town   Rhos
County/Island   Denbighshire
Country   Wales
Registration district   Wrexham
Sub-registration district   Ruabon
ED, institution, or vessel   12
Household schedule number   14
Piece   5653
Folio   4
Page number   3

And looks like I actually do have them in 1881:
Civil parish   Ruabon
County/Island   Denbighshire
Country   Wales
Street Address   Pant
Condition as to marriage   Married
Occupation   Coal Miner
Registration district   Wrexham
Sub registration district   Ruabon
ED, institution, or vessel   12
Piece   5513
Folio   47
Page number   5

I guess I have not found them in 1861, and as you said, 1841 is missing...

Well, I've started out correctly - have just written 1851 HO107/2503/281/2   on my notepad.  They might be missing on 1861 as well, as there were a few pieces missing for the area.

Did the first Philip die?

Wow, that would explain the name of Philip for their first son!

Was Robert their second son?  Also did they have any other daughters?  if so, can you list them in birth order.

It's often the case that they used family names - usually husband's father, wife's father and girl often taking the wife's mother's name, then husband's mother. Not always but often.

How about:

Ruabon
3 Jan 1797
Elizabeth d of John and Sarah Jones of Moreton Above

You'd need to check that they didn't die or marry someone else but I think the two that I've found are reasonably candidates.
