Elusive Arthur
« on: Friday 23 February 18 21:56 GMT (UK) »
Help or advice please.

I have been researching tracing my Great Grandfather Arthur Oakes. I have traced the following and confirmed with family members these are correct.

1911 Census - Allington, Rossett, Denbighshire, Wales. Born 1869 London, London
1904 Marrriage - Chester, Cheshire, England to Ellen Price
1901 Census - Hoylake Cum West Kirby, Cheshire, England. Born 1870 London
1939 Register &  Death record tie up.

However this has been a family mystery how Arthur born in London ended up in the
North West/North Wales. I am unable to locate any census records for Arthur Oakes, Oake, Oates, Oat etc,etc for the 1871, 1881 & 1891 Census's or birth record.

Any pointers in my next steps of research would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Henry Oakes 41

Arthur 11

This Arthur (son of Henry, born Peckham/Camberwell) married Rose Mary Bowbrick in Peckham in 1899 and seems to have stayed with her.

I am unable to locate any census records for Arthur Oakes, Oake, Oates, Oat etc,etc for the 1871, 1881 & 1891 Census's or birth record.

Do you know his father's name?  It might help when digging through censuses.

If not, perhaps you should order the relatively inexpensive pdf of his marriage, which should have a father's name on it. (Paper copies cost more).

You would need the following info to order from the GRO:

Name:    Arthur Oakes
Registration Year:    1904
Registration Quarter:    Oct-Nov-Dec
Registration district:    Chester
Volume:    8a
Page:    743

The GRO is free to sign up to, which you would need to do to order, and is at https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp
