So just where did my ancestors live (Kilmarnock)
« on: Saturday 24 February 18 03:51 GMT (UK) »
Had a fruitful day at the Burns Monument Centre yesterday and now trying to find where my 4x grt Gran was  born.

My 4x grt Gran was the oldest of 9 children (only found 8 so far).  I know this thanks to the minister specifying first second etc on baptisms.  On the baptism of my 4x grt grandmother and 6 of her siblings the address is given as either Low or Laigh Milton but the middle child it is Milton of Grougar.  My first thought was somewhere near Laigh Milton Viaduct but then discovered that there were still Grougar Cottages on Milton Rd more in the direction of Galston and Moscow.  So does anyone know do these addresses refer to the same place? Which (or neither) of these locations does it refer to?

Kilmarnock between 1779 and 1794. The name was Caldwell.

Hi again Pharma T,

I would lean towards Laigh Milton and Milton of Grougar being one and the same area - around Crookedholm just outside Kilmarnock.  However I'm no expert on old placemames, so I could be wrong. But I would check references to that area, if I were you.

Read especially the paragraph referring to Grougar - Laighmilton also lay in Grougar and in 1766 its rental was 1s 8d per acre, rising to £4 per acre in 1811

Hope this is useful,

Looby :)

Here is a period map http://maps.nls.uk/view/74400204

In 1775 it was held by Sir Geo. Colebrooke and had an assessed value of £1,497 which makes it the 2nd highest in the parish.
