Joyce Gudgeon born 27th Aug 1929 in Bradford, Yorkshire
« on: Monday 26 February 18 22:39 GMT (UK) »
My mother in law was born at 217 Horton Lane, Bradford.

It appears to have been a workhouse. Would it have been a workhouse when she was born or a hospital. I see that at some point it was changed into a hospital.

Hi, not sure if this helps. But I lived in Little Horton Green, Little Horton, Bradford and it was near to St Luke's Hospital. I'm in my 50's now but when I was about 10 one of the older neighbours told me the hospital used to be a workhouse. I'm not sure if it's true, but the building was very old.  My brother was born at the hospital also. There is Little Horton and Great Horton in Bradford. Little Horton is nearest to the city centre. I've noticed a lot of people look for Horton. But its divided up Little Horton and Great Horton probably as the area grew.

Many, if not most, workhouses had infirmaries. It was not necessary to be a resident of the workhouse  in order to be admitted to the infirmary. You have to remember the NHS only started in 1948.

217 Horton Lane, Bradford was the address of birth - who was the informant and was this also the address of informant? How long after birth was the registration made?

If the informant was the mother and she was still at that address days/weeks after birth, or if the birth certificate was registered by an employee of the workhouse, they may have been longer-term residents.

If the informant was the mother and she was at a different address by the time of registration she probably just came to the infirmary for the birth itself and then moved on.

Horton Lane is Little Horton Lane.  i lived next to St Luke's and I found an old map on this site and it says Bradford Union Workhouse where St Lukes Hospital is now.  It looks like its St Luke's Hospital.
