Search for a very common name
« on: Tuesday 27 February 18 09:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I'm new to all this and am unable to progress any further with a search for a relative's date or place of death. She has a very common name ' Mary Robertson' and was born and lived in Glasgow. both her siblings have similarly common names and no middle name. I can trace her address in Glasgow up to 1953 and then she disappears. I have spent a fortune at Scotland's People,on credits and the death certificates of umpteen Mary Robertsons  born the same year, 1899, who died in Glasgow after 1953. I have searched using both her maiden name and married name Roberts. Is there anything left I can do? Finding her place and date of death would help solve a problematic family mystery. Thank you.

Can you narrow down when she died -
eg
When did her husband die- was she the informant or was he already widowed?
Did she have children - is she a witness at any of their marriages?
Likewise siblings - does she witness any of their marriages?
Did either of her parents leave Wills - if so was she an executor?

I know nothing of Scottish Research, so sorry I cant point you as to where to look for any of these records - just throwing in ideas!

PS  And a warm welcome to Rootschat!!! Just noticed it is your first post.

Thank you so much for your reply. I know she had died by 1965 as her husband remarried then, as a widower. I have a photo of her attending her eldest son's wedding in 1951. Her younger son does aged 4 in 1936. Her parents died before 1953 which is the last date I have for her. I am unable to trace either of her siblings as Margaret and Alexander Robertson appear to be two of the most popular names in Scotland at that time! I think I'm facing a brick wall, though I shall persevere!

When I did a search on Scotlandspeople for a Mary Roberts, born 1899 +/- 1 year, died 1953 to 1965, I only got 6 'hits', and all but one of those had extra names.

Why did you look under Robertson if her surname at death was Roberts?

If Margaret or Alexander died after 1974, their Mother's maiden surname is recorded - is that going to be useful, or is it another common surname?

When was Mary ROBERTSON born, and who where her parents?

I have some unwanted ROBERTS certificates from Glasgow because my ROBERTS' are also from there.  Maybe my unwanted are what you want.
