Last hope in tracing Mary Annie Grandfather Collman
« on: Tuesday 27 February 18 14:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I have been researching the male family line of a friend and run into a big WALL! Her great great grandfather Henry John Peacock (1848 -1895) married this lady at Holy Trinity, Tulse Hill on 20 Aug 1871. Both of this parish. Mary Annie daughter of James Collman a coachman. I can find no trace of her before this and no trace of her in Tulse Hill area in 1871 census. She gives her age at marriage as 22, as does her husband. Consistently on censuses she says she was born Knightsbridge and her age varies between 1849 - 1852. She dies in West Ham in Dec quarter 1925.
I have found a James Colman/Coleman, coachman living with Elizabeth Hoskins Ward (married William Escott 12 Nov 1854 Trinity Church Marylebone) William is living with and married to Charlotte Susan Elger from 1868. James is clearly with Elizabeth in censuses from 1871 and I have happily traced his parentage from Lowestoft area before that. However I can't find him before 1871 (maybe in 1841 when he is single and in Norfolk). Is this the correct James I wonder or am I spinning along a false track?
There is a baptism of a Mary Ann Colman in 1853 along with brother James, giving her birth date as 1 September 1850 to a James Colman and Mary Ann, this James is a saddler. I can't find this family in any censuses.
Does anyone have any ideas, Please?

Hi,
I found 2 Mary Ann(ie) Col(l)man, with the Father James.
In 1881 Elizabeth H Colman was with James, the Walter W Escott is a step son to James.
This family has no mention of Mary Ann(ie).
There is a death for Mary Ann in 1851 in Lowestoff with James and Elizabeth as the parents names.
The other Mary Annie, with the Father James, her Mother was Martha.
I will send all the records in Private Message.

Unless the information refers to living people, please post openly as others will be more willing to help rather than thinking it is all being done off-forum.

They were 1881 census for James Colman aged 61 born Lowestoft and his wife/partner Elizabeth Hoskins Colman/Escott/Ward, a baptismal record for Mary Ann Colman daughter of James and Mary Ann available on ancestry, giving her dob as 1 September 1850, baptism was 1853 in Kennington and her father was a saddler; and the death of a Mary Ann Colman daughter of James and Elizabeth in 1851 in Lowestoft - all of which I had seen - but they add to the picture. I have tentatively accepted the baptism but can find no more trace of this Mary Ann and her brother James, born 1852 (baptised at same time).
Thanks for any help

I think this must be the family who baptised their children in Kennington. Could be she!  But Stepney isn't  Knights bridge is it? Thanks though.

Just thought if you say to the census man my name is Mary Ann E Colman/Peacock he is likely to write down Mary Annie!
Mary Ann Elizabeth was born 4th quarter in Stepney mother's last name is  Hudswell.
Let's see if this goes anywhere.
